What is Matrimonial Immunity?

According to 24 U.S. Code § 3012, anyone currently officiating a wedding holds something called Matrimonial Immunity.

"Matrimonial Immunity" is defined as a temporary state held by the wedding officiant while performing their duties, that allows them complete and total immunity from being arrested, charged or convicted of any crimes while within the continental United States of America.
